At only eighteen years old, singer-songwriter Adeline V. Lopez is on track to become one of the greatest artists of this generation. Her relatable lyrics and beautiful instrumentals are bound to get listeners to fall in love with her.
I had the honor and pleasure of speaking to her about her latest EP release, “i heard she’s crazy.” Here’s a little bit of what she had to say.
I listened to “i heard she’s crazy,” what would you say inspired the EP the most?
“The title of the EP comes from high school and being in New York, the regular amount of chit chat that goes on in school. I was graduating and really excited to grow up and move on from those challenges and reclaim that. The inspiration behind the songs is different from each one ‘belvidere’” is very much influenced by growing up in New York. It’s about going to this place called Belvedere Castle in New York with my friends. ‘Bloodstream’ is about relationships and wanting something that’s not good for you. All of those songs have a different backstory but they’re all about feelings that I wanted to get out.”
Do you have any favorite tracks off the EP?
“‘I heard she’s crazy’ it’s the title track and when I listen to it I feel like I’m empowering myself. I really like Belvidier. It’s a waltz so you can just dance and I envision myself in the park with my friends dancing in the middle of the night.”
How was the process of putting together the EP?
“This EP I did things a little bit different than the others. I take my guitar its 4am and I turn off all the lights in my room and freestyle. I record it and listen to it and then pick out what I like, what lyrics were good and which weren’t. A lot of songs on the EP came about in that way. For ‘to the boys i grew up with’ I went to the studio and we actually created the beat first which is something I don’t usually do. This let me feel where the song was going. Lyrics are the most important part for me.”
What was it like getting to perform for the EP?
“It was at Wolf Studios and I performed with my band. We did all the songs from the EP. My favorite part of being an artist is performing. A bunch of people I didn’t know showed up and that was really emotional for me, to be able to see fans face to face. Seeing everyone there that wants to support you is one of the best feelings ever. All my music is very honest and very real to stuff that I go through, it’s really a page of my diary. It’s really vulnerable and knowing there are people in it.”
Are there any musicians you look up to, if so who?
“Lana Del Rey and Sabrina Carpenter are my two icons. I’ve been obsessed with Sabrina since she was on the Disney Channel. She was my first concert and she was the first person that inspired me to pursue art. I began acting first so she really inspired me to act and sin. She made me feel like I could achieve what I want to do. Seeing her success has been so inspiring because I’ve seen her from the beginning. Stylistically Lana Del Rey is someone who I take inspiration off of. Her lyrics resonate with so many young women. Her ability to talk about a very personal experience that doesn’t resonate with a lot of people but still manages to turn it into a universal feeling is something I wish to emulate.”
What would be your dream collab with an artist someday?
“Besides Lana and Sabrina..I’m going to go with Billy Joel. He’s someone that my parents and I listen to. ‘Vienna ‘’ is probably one of my favorite songs ever, I sing a cover of that song at almost every show.”
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
“Five years from now I just graduated from college. I hope in five years from now I’m able to take care of myself with my music. Not just with money, I’m not just saying I hope I make enough, but I mean I hope my music is able to be the north star of my life. There are so many other things that I have to worry about right now, whether it’s school or work. I would like to hopefully tour by then.”
What’s a weird hobby or passion you have?
“This is very similar to theater, I am really obsessed with Shakespeare. I am such a Shakespeare nerd. I love Romeo and Juliet. I spend a lot of my free time reading and watching Shakespare. So yeah, I guess reading.”
Who would you say has been your biggest supporter along the way?
“My parents have definitely believed in me since day one. They’ve done everything they can to get me where I am right now.”
You’re young and talented. How do you juggle your artistic career, school, and a social life?
“Honestly, it’s hard I think how I rationalize it to myself, if I only ever did music I would never have anything to write about. So part of my job is to go out and live and put myself in situations where I can write a song about it. Hanging out with friends and my social life is a sort of extension of my writing. This is what I really love to do, and anything that I have to do to get myself on stage is worth it to me.”
What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
“I have so many big dreams, so many bucket list goals, but I also think I have a lot of very small goals that are really important to me. When people DM on Instagram and tell me a song of mine helped them through a tough time that is really important to me. I hope to be able to have people know I can understand what they’re going through with my music. “
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced throughout your career and how have they affected the person you are today?
“Well like I said I started acting before I really focused on music, so I don’t know if i would call that a challenge. A lot of what I learned on set I apply to my music. I want to tell a story and perform a story. The challenge that I’ve really faced in both aspects is because I got into both so young, my peers would have a lot to say about it. And that’s definitely where I heard she’s crazy comes from.”
If you could tell anything to any future listeners what would you say?
“Thanks for listening, that’s dope, I’d start with that. If my music resonates with you for any reason you can DM me. If you listen to my music and want to talk I am more than happy to.”
